DEVELOPING “AROUND THE WORLD IN 60 MINUTES” BOARD GAME FOR THE SPEAKING ACTIVITIES OF TENTH GRADERS OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

The final product of this study was a set of a board game namely “Around the World in 60 Minutes” to be used by students in speaking activities. The board game was developed based on the basic competences of the first semester syllabus used for the tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Malang. The language functions of the selected basic competences were expressions for introducing, complimenting, showing care, showing intention, and congratulating. The study was classified into Research and Development (R & D) research because the result was a product used for educational purposes. The study was conducted in seven stages of development; need analysis, developing material, expert and teacher validation, first revision, try-out, second revision, and producing the final product. The need analysis showed that the target students needed an instructional medium for speaking activities. In the developing material stage, the prototype of the product was developed. Some aspects of the products; the content, language, design, and the pedagogy were validated by a lecturer and teacher. A revision was conducted based on the feedback from the lecturer and teacher’s validation. Then, the comprehensive data about the use of product were obtained from the try-out stage as the input for producing the final product. Based on the result of the try-out, the board game has achieved the objective of the study. The board gamefacilitates the students to practice their English as well as motivate them to speak English. The questionnaire distributed after the try-out showed that the students were really interested in the board game because it offered some interesting topics appropriate with their level of proficiency. For English teachers, the board game is expected to be useful as a supplementary medium for speaking activity.The board game, however, was only designed for the speaking activities of tenth graders of senior high school. Other researchers are encouraged to integrate other English skills such as listening, reading, and writing or develop other games for different level of students
